La Plagne Resort Information

A Short History

La Plagne was established in 1960, situated in one of the most beautiful natural sites in the Alps. The diversity of la Plagne’s scenery, architecture and panoramic views makes it a rather special resort, rather rare in Europe. It has something for everyone and it’s difficult not to fall for the charm la Plagne has to offer.

La Plagne first developed in the early 19th century due to the silver that was to be found in the lead mines around the slopes. These mines became refuges for members of the French Resistance during the Second World War, a place where they could hide out and test their weapons without fear of discovery. The mines were also used to hide munitions that were dropped by British troops before being distributed further afield, there is a war memorial in Plagne Centre to the British air crews that were involved in such operations. ‘Mont de la Guerre’ above Champagny is named in memory of the conflicts that took place between locals and German soldiers.

La Plagne opened its first ski lifts in December 1961. It was a modest start, just two drag lifts serving four slopes, but it was the beginning of the skiers paradise which exists today.

In 1992 when Albertville hosted the 16th Winter Olympics, La Plagne built the only Olympic Bobsleigh Piste in France and was one of the highlights of the competition. The bobsleigh is still used for world and European events, as well as being one of La Plagne’s most popular attractions. A number of rides such as the bob-raft, taxi-bob and mini-bob let you feel the speed and excitement of bobsleigh for yourself!

La Plagne for Children

La Plagne is very much a family-friendly resort and welcomes children of all ages. From things that you can do as a family to activities that the children can go off and do with their new 'holiday friends' you will find plenty to keep everyone happy.

La Plagne offers reduced lift pass rates to children aged between 6 and 13 years; children of 5 years and under ski for free. Please note that for age-related discounts you may need to show proof of birth date. There is also a family pass that offers a reduced rate to groups of two adults and 2 or more children.

Oxygène takes on children from 3 years, who start in our special Childrens Ski Ground, where we teach them that skiing is fun, and combine it with other snow play activities. Then they progres onto the nursery slopes, and afterwards they are off and away!

Local Food & Drink

Traditional Savoyard food can be found in abundance and most of it is of good quality. Restaurants serve well known speciality dishes such as fondue, raclette and tartiflette.

Fondue - A favourite in most Alpine ski resorts. It is traditionally a Swiss dish but the term comes from the French word fondre which means to melt. Melted cheese (Emmenthal, Comté and Beaufort often mixed together) is served at the table in a large pot on a burner with either chunks of stale bread or meat that are dipped into the cheese and eaten with a long fork.

Raclette - An alternative tastier cheese dish served with a selection of cold meats, potatoes, green salad and baby gherkins. The raclette cheese is made in the Savoie region of France. When it is brought to the table it will likely be a large triangular piece cut from a round that is secured to a heat lamp that will gently melt the cheese. You will scrape the cheese directly onto the plate and eat with the charcuterie and potatoes that come with it.

Tartiflette - Reblochon is its main ingredient, a strong smelling cheese from the Savoie. The cheese is laid on top of layers of sliced potatoes, lardons (bacon pieces) and onion and is baked in the oven until melted over the dish. There is normally a salad to accompany it. It is a warming, tasty dish on a cold day although be careful how much you eat at lunchtime, you may not be able to ski afterwards!

Other dishes you will find plenty of include La Pierrade where you cook a selection of small pieces of meat yourself on a hot stone, and Crozats often served with Diots. Crozats are tiny squares of pasta and Diots are traditional earthy tasting sausages both normally cooked in white wine and are delicious!

The French are very generous with their ‘Plat du Jour’ dishes and it is often good value for money – around €12-€15 on the mountain. Prices for snacks and sandwiches vary but you should be able to pick up a panini for example, for under €5 and soft drinks for under €2. Alcohol is normally cheaper than buying soft drinks in France and if there is more than one person drinking it is worth buying pichets (jugs) of wine and Vin Chaud that are much, much cheaper than buying by the glass; normally around €12 for a litre. Prices are generally nowhere near as high as in nearby resorts such as Courchevel and Val d’Isere.
