Where to find La Plagne

All about La Plagne

La Plagne history
La Plagne was first developed commercially in the early 19th century, when lead and silver mines operated in what is now Plagne 1800. These mines became refuges for the French Resistance during the Second World War, as well as being used to hide British munitions drops. The war memorial in Plagne Centre commemorates the British air crews involved in these operations, whilst ‘Mont de la Guerre’ above Champagny is named in memory of the conflicts that took place between locals and German soldiers.

Winter activities in La Plagne

The ski resort of La Plagne is made up of a number of small villages, all connected by free public transport and, of course, a vast network of ski lifts and pistes. The resort was established in 1960, with the first ski lifts grinding into motion in December 1961: two drag lifts, serving four slopes. Over the 40 years that followed, La Plagne has developed into one of the premier ski destinations in France. Following the Albertville Olympics of 1992, La Plagne also boasts the only Olympic Bobsleigh piste in France - still open to the public today.

Rides on the Bobsleigh are just one of many non-ski activities available in La Plagne. Snowshoeing, moonlight skiing, skidoo rides, sledging, husky sledding and parapenting are all on offer, and all can be booked through Oxygène - contact us to find out more.

Resort heroes

La Plagne boasts plenty of born and bred wintersports champions, including:

  • Jean-Luc Crétier Olympic descent champion in Nagano, 1998
  • Sandra Laoura Olympic Bronze medal (bumps) in Turin, 2006
  • Julien Lizeroux Double Silver medal, World Championships in Val d’Isère in 2009
  • Kevin Rolland Three-times Superpipe gold medallist at the X-Games (Europe and US)
